What the payback number actually means
The result is not a forecast of what you will earn. It is a break-even calculation: the money you have to put in before the idea starts paying you back. Upfront investment combines your one-time learning and setup hours, converted at your own target rate, with the tool and subscription costs you pay during the ramp-up period.
Payback compares that total against monthly net profit. A 10-week payback on a $400 investment is a very different decision from a 40-week payback on the same money, even if both ideas show a similar monthly income.
Where the model is deliberately conservative
The income band assumes you convert 55% to 95% of your available hours into paid work. Beginners rarely hit the top of that band, because demand takes time to build. If your result only works at the optimistic end, treat it as a warning rather than a plan.
Nothing here accounts for taxes, refunds, or clients who pay late. Those are handled separately by the net income checker, which is why the two tools are linked.
